Glacier Woodcut: Chief Mountain, Ninaistaako

$450.00

Commissioned in 2017 by Many Glacier Lodge in Glacier National Park.

Chief Mountain is an iconic natural and cultural landmark on the northeastern edge of what is now Glacier National Park. In 2017, when I was asked to create 3 woodblock prints that conveyed important stories in Glacier, I asked Sun Tours founder Ed DesRosier what stories or places are important to his tribal nation, the Blackfeet. I decided to create an image of Ninaistaako at dawn, this unforgettable square-topped mountain that still holds great cultural significance to the Blackfeet people.

Since I designed and carved the Chief back in 2017, the Blackfeet Nation has released a wild herd of buffalo near there. The herd rambles in and around GNP as well as the Blackfeet Reservation. Please give the mountain space and do not hike near or climb Chief Mountain. This sacred area is reserved for cultural traditional ceremonies and must be left undisturbed.

11” x 11” original hand-carved woodblock print. Limited edition of 100.

Printed by hand using a Takach intaglio press on heavyweight Rives BFK 100% cotton paper. Hand-colored with layers of luminous watercolor.

Each print is painted individually by hand. Variations between pieces in the edition are normal and part of what makes each piece unique.
